Edison Chen quits the entertainment industry

Edison Chen finally made his way to Hong Kong for a much anticipated press conference. There he confirmed the authenticity of the leaked sex photos and apologized for the media chaos it caused. In a surprising move, he also promised to quit the Hong Kong entertainment industry indefinitely. Note that he only specified Hong Kong.
“Most importantly, I would like to say sorry to all the people in Hong Kong. I give my apologies sincerely to you all, unreservedly and with my heart,” he said.
He added: “I know young people in Hong Kong look up to many figures in our society. And, in this regard, I failed as a role model.”
“During my time away, I’ve made an important decision. I will wholeheartedly fulfill all commitments that I have to date. But, after that, I’ve decided to step away from the Hong Kong entertainment industry. I’ve decided to do this to give myself an opportunity to heal myself and to search my soul,” he said.
“I will be away from Hong Kong entertainment indefinitely.”
I wish this would happen in America. Like, when Paris Hilton released her sex tape, she would be shamed into hiding, eventually make a big statement about quitting showbiz, everyone would cheer and life would be good. But, no. Blowing that dude only magnified her fame. This is why I suggest we ship Paris over to Hong Kong and not poke air holes through her box.

It’s so stupid how EC had to step down on his career due to this matter. Who gives a f*ck!!! Nothing was wrong with what he did nor the girls. The deal is – we, the hong kong chinese people have more respect and dignity in such matter relating sex and relatonship. He’s suppose to be a well rehearsed and accomplished actor. If he truly wrote that speech, he wouldn’t have to refer to his notes. For a 7 minute speech, looking down at the paper some 20 or more times is worse than what some high school students would do during a public speaking competition. He’s also had a LOT of time to plan is public apology, delaying his return and all… Memorizing that speech would have been easier than memorizing lines in The Grudge.
It’s not that there is supposed to be any sort of compensation to be paid. No one asked him to leave the entertainment industry and if he were to make movies, people would probably still watch it. Any publicity is good publicity. As many have stated, if nothing else this ‘fiasco’ probably turned him into “that guy in the Grudge”, a movie that wasn’t that memorable, to someone that sticks out.
Really though, I am sure at least some sincerity would have been appreciated… Is that too much to ask?
You are so seriously wrong. Who says stars in Hong Kong have to play naive and innocent? How naive and innocent was Anita Mui? Cecilia never even pretended to be. Or what about Wei Lan? Just like in American, some people do “naive and innocent” like Britney used to do, and some people do “bad girl” like Madonna. “Twins” were set up to rip off “Tatu”, and Tatu was anything except naive and innocent. In both places it would be better if we judged them by their music instead of their image, but then some of them wouldn’t even have a career. And since when did Edison pretend to be ‘naive and innocent”. Everyone knew he fucked around. What people didn’t know until the pictures came out was that he was the kind of loser to take them.
Unlike you, if I HAD kept such trophy pictures of myself boning women on my computer (I don’t need “evidence” by the way), including the wife of a friend, and if I had lost them and fucked up those women’s lives, yeah I WOULD say it was my fault. You know, there are actors in this world, there are singers in this world, and there are idols. Most of the people involved in this aren’t great actors or singers. They are idols.
You pay attention to them because you want to see your idols doing things, not because you expect any talent anywhere else. And one of the major things many people are interested in their idols doing is having sex. Why not? Idols SELL sex appeal. It’s all they have. He/she who LIVES by being an idol and nothing else (like the Kardashians for example) is very prone to die by being an idol, if they fall. It’s the deal they make.
People ask why these pictures got so popular. I’ll tell you a very good reason. Because the public knew they were being bullshitted and played for fools. There are thousands of Photoshopped pictures of stars, from Hong Kong and other places, on the internet. The Hong Kong police say they don’t know this, but everyone else does. When people go crazy over a bunch of pictures they claim are Photoshopped, everyone KNOWS it’s not true. When police and entertainment industry people try to stop people seeing and judging for themselves, they are pissed off because they KNOW they are being suckered.
The pictures themselves aren’t even that hot, but do NOT play me for a sucker and expect me not to check it out for myself. Even if they’d been openly acknowledged as genuine from day one, there’d be a ton of downloads, but the way it was handled made it worse. And made the pictures more popular.

This happens not only in Hk, at Vietnam, an actress has to step down due to her sex tape being leaked. For those 8 years old who are continue saying EDC did nothing wrong and this his private matter, please grow a brain.
This unfortunate saga all stemmed from EDC’s extreme negligence in protecting his privacies as well as the privacy of the other parties involved in the photos. EDC has a duty of care to those who entrusted him to the safe keeping of the photos and he failed them.
And it became not a private matter when the photos were leaked and freely available to the public. When you are a public figure or in the entertainment industry, you also owe a duty of care to the general public because of your personal standing within the society and this is the reason why these artists are paid millions of dollars for endorsment and advertisment contracts instead of you and me. They cannot reap this benefit and ignore the downfall.
If you still do not get this, i advise you to speak to your parents or an adult for this matter.
It is a nice political skill for EDC saying he is going to leave the HK entertainment industry specifically but mention nothing about China, Asia or Hollywood.
The HK police only seized EDC personal computer from his flat and held him for inerviews for 7 hours yesterday. Should EDC not offer to do this 3 weeks ago and issue a statement saying he indeed took the photos and owes the copyright so to stop the photos spreading at an earlier time?
Can we honestly believe he is so sadden by this that he had the time to go to LA and meet with his manager there before coming back to HK?
