Meredith Baxter Birney comes out on the Today Show

Meredith Baxter Birney, who has five kids from three marriages, went on The Today Show this morning too announce that she is lesbian. Meredith didn’t think it was a big deal. She only wanted to announce it after being under pressure from tabloids like The National Enquirer who recently printed pictures of her and her partner on a lesbian cruise.

Meredith, who played Mrs. Keaton, Michael J. Fox’s mom on Family Ties, says she discovered herself seven years ago. Four years ago she met Nancy Locke who she’s still with to this day.

Congratulations, I guess. I wish other women would come out as lesbian or, better yet, bisexual. I’m looking at you Ashley Greene and Alessandra Ambrosio. That way in my fantasy when those two pick me up at a grocery store and bring me to their mansion to judge their lingerie pillow fight and kissing technique, the only unrealistic part will be that I was buying milk when they hit on me. I’m lactose intolerant, you see.

Sorry, Michael J. Fox’s mom, not DiCaprio. Damn Growing Pains!

I wrote a novel about a woman coming out late-in-life called Seeking Sara Summers. For these women it isn’t about getting their 15 minutes of fame (a criticism I saw of Meredith Baxter on another site), it’s about getting a life. I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage to simply be who you are.

@writergabriel … Yes, it’s TOTALLY just about attention getting. She’s a mother of 5 & has been married 3 times. Now all of a sudden at 62 the clouds have parted & she has this revelation that she is a dyke!?!? This is a sad & confused woman. Besides attention whoring, I see no conceivable reason for her to get on TV & announce to the world the she’s a carpet munching purv. At her age this is obviously nothing more then a cheap & lame publicity stunt at trying to rekindle a career that has been all but dead… Read more »

I do not see why she felt the need to go on live TV and announce that she Gay. Who cares at least most of us do not. Of all the things going on in the world. that news is not of any interest at all.

Let her come out of the closet the world will see. She is trying to promote more business.

Takes a lot of courage..you are a strong woman. We must be proud of who we are..at all times. She came out because the media was going to out her. And we all know it could have been in a negative light and a false rumor to go along with it. Good for you Meredith.. I am A LESBIAN AND VERY PROUD!

People who attacked this women are very sad – very, very sad. It takes a lot of courage to “be different”. I’m writing this because bullying has become a huge issue in our schools. I think clearly in many of these comments we see the bullies of society – people who for whatever reason are just mean to be mean. Why should it matter whom a person loves? That’s between them and their conscience. I wasn’t put on earth to judge them beyond what they do here. And the judgement then should be about what kind of person they are… Read more »

No one comes out “for publicity.” Telling anyone, whether it is your family or a national T.V. audience, is a difficult and vulnerable act. Meredith Baxter Birney did it with a lot of grace and dignity. It is news because she is correct when she states that coming out is a political action in today’s society. It will cease to be news when Gay and Lesbian individuals have all of the same rights as everyone else and is no longer called a “purv” (which by the way you spelled incorrectly) or people stop making comments about getting a toaster oven.

I’m really appalled at what Limbaugh said. Who made you the judge of anyone? It’s sad that you have a hard time saying anything positive about anyone. I pray you rethink how you make negative comments. They will come back to bite you in the rear. Kate M.

I have had a crush on Meredith Baxter ever since she was a young actress. Now I know why I found her so attractive.
You go, girl.

I was very surprised. I’m listening to her audio book of her life. I’ve always liked her as an actress. But ummm shocked to find out that she’s gay. I’ve always looked up to her as a romantic… ‘Bridget loves Bernie’. Not that I don’t still feel the same but ummmm she’s just not what I thought. I’m glad she was able to find herself. And it doesn’t matter who you love as long as you’re happy.
