Demi Lovato Is Offended

Apparently one of the side-effects or rehab is losing your sense of humor because Demi Lovato took offense to an innocuous joke the Disney Channel aired on “Shake It Up” which went, “I could just eat you up… well if I ate.”

Demi, who left the Disney show “Sonny With a Chance” to battle her own food disorders/anger issues, went on Twitter to write, “I could just eat you up, well if I ate” – Disney Chanel’s Shake It Up…. What are we promoting here? #notfunnyATALL” and “I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease….. #nice.” Demi also added, “Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT.” The tweets can basically be summed up as “me! me! me! everything is about me!”

The PR department at Disney rolled their eyes, let out a loud sigh and farted out the apology, “We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them … It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!”

Aw, calm down, tubs. First of all, this joke has been around in some form since the dawn of television. It’s actually one of the least offensive jokes out there. That is until an oversensitive celebrity twists it around to fit her own agenda and gets all uppity about it. Second of all, how do you know she had an eating disorder? Maybe she was on a diet and was prone to hyperbole?

Now, if in the scene the girl punched one of her backup dancers, cut herself, gained 20 pounds and THEN made the joke, that would be a different story.

Video of the skit after the jump.

First of all Disney channel tv shows should be setting an example for teenage girls and obviously eating disorder jokes people take offensively. I don’t think Demi is being too sensitive about it. Anything like that shouldn’t be said on television because media is s HUGE influence on everyone! Demi took it offensively because she’s had her struggles and I’m sure other girls watching the show have too! It is wrong!

This “article” is dumb.  First of all, old news.  Second, you should be applauding the young woman for taking a stand.

This is an incredibly offensive article. I applaude Demi for speaking up against this “joke,” and I find it sad that the author here not only diminished what she is trying to do but resorted to fat jokes in response. I feel this just highlights the ignorance and insensitivity of the author as opposed to making Demi seem like a pr seeking actress.

You are totally out of line! As a social worker who deals with teens who have eating disorders and self esteem problems, you making fun of Demi making a very valid point is revolting!

You guys are fucked up. This kind of article is what made Demi go through all of that in the first place. How about you grow up and stop making her look like a bad person when she is far from it. And I like how all of the comments on here are telling you off. So maybe you should rethink things.

Demiz been out of the biz so long she has to take a comment from a show that aired that episide a long time ago abd hot all pisst. That show or comment was no directed to her or anyone. She needs to stop being so self absorbed

First off, I have no idea what you are saying. Please learn to speak english. Second, the comment was directed to poke fun at the stereotype that models dont eat. What they dont realize is that this STEREOTYPE is called an…EATING DISORDER. Something you and the moron who wrote this garbage doesn’t understand. Get that yet?

I love this write up! The article even says this joke has been around since the dawn of TV. Now that the line actually fits 1of their employees it can’t be touched? Wrong, I don’t see it as poking fun, but creating an awreness for the sickness that people create. I hope Demi can get passed her inner demons, and conquer this, because it is a long road…I know because I have expirenced it. So Demi needs to worry about herself and realize what she needs to do, not anyone else!!

Yeah but the joke hasn’t been around the DISNEY CHANNEL since well…ever now. Dunno if you know this but Disney channel isn’t really known for delivering controversial line that pokes fun at people with eating disorders. Intentionally or not. IF you don’t see this as poking fun then you’re not to familiar with comedy because that is what it was doing. What you don’t understand is that Demi is an ACTIVIST. This is what ACTIVISTS do. Doi?!

Wow maybe the writer of this article could have persuaded me if they didn’t act like a complete asshole. What garbage. Grow up and learn to just explain your opinion instead of resorting to insults and acting like a child.

I understand what Demi is saying but still this is an old episode…plus this isn’t the first time a model has made a joke like that . Most of Disney’s audience are little kids. While its important to promote being healthy, I seriously doubt that it was taken as something so serious with the kids. I don’t want to say Demi is being sensitive but due to the fact that it is something that she just went through, is probably why she feels so strongly about it now. She made a comment about how she misses Lizzie McGuire and That’s… Read more »

Yeah this isnt the first time a model made a line like this. you know why? its a stereotype that models have EATING DISORDERS. Also what does it matter if the line is old or not? The holocaust happened hundreds years ago but I think if you talk to the jewish community and tell them that it was soo long ago and they need to get over it, i dont think they would take to kindly tot hat statement. Just saying

Ummm….hundreds of years ago? The Holocaust? Really? Good lord! Maybe your time would be better spent on your history homework than on lecturing others. Just a suggestion…

Do you think this is funny? F**k the person that wrote this. This dumb show shouldn’t of said anything even remotely along those lines in the first place, it was offensive to many people as well as Demi. Until you have an eating disorder, and know what it’s like, and what you go through, don’t say s**t about it. And the last line of this ‘report’ is extremely offensive.  ” Now, if in the scene the girl punched one of her backup dancers, cut herself, gained 20 pounds and THEN made the joke, that would be a different story.” In… Read more »

Blame her but at the same time this joke has been said in many other shows and some models r actully like that its preety pathetic truthfull disney didn’t mean any harm by it but demi dose have a rught to be mad

It is an okay joke to have on an adult show, but it is not appropriate for a show that is aimed at the vulnerable preteen audience. I think that it is great of her to stand up for other people with eating disorders.

To the moron who wrote this garbage. Actually eating disorder jokes have never been part of Disney forier into comedy before. If you actually did research these jokes were in prime time network shows. Not Children’s programming. I think its actually funny that you say that these jokes have been around since the dawn of television yet what you fail to realize is that it hasn’t been around since the dawn of the DISNEY CHANNEL. I understand that you guys harbor some ill feelings to a celebrity who are more successful than you are and you guys are clearly jealous… Read more »

I actually agree with this. I  love Demi and after her battle with that eating disorder I saw her as a role model, but how long has it been since this episode aired? She’s not the first person to have had an eating disorder and i also think she could have solved this in a whole different way rather than making it public. The person that wrote this article was rude but I undestand the message it is trying to communicate. Don’t snap at me for expressing what i think. It is not meant to offend anyone nor Demi.
