Dawson Crying Was Not Scripted. Mind. Blown

You’re going to want to sit down for this one. While promoting his new series Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, James Van Der Beek talked about that famous scene of him crying in Dawson’s Creek which has seemingly turned into the longest-running internet meme of all internet memes.

Van Der Beek says the tears he shed were never supposed to happen. He was just in the moment.

“It wasn’t scripted, I don’t think,” he said. “I mean, it was appropriate for the scene. You know, it was just high drama; you’ve been living with this character for a while and a scene like that just kind of drops in your lap and you just lose it. They yell cut and say, ‘Oh my god. That was amazing!’ So I remember being completely surprised by it because it was completely sincere. [Laughs.] The fact that it’s being used to mock me now, I think it’s so funny.” THR

People must be so relieved to hear that James Van Der Beek has a sense of humor about himself. If he turned out to be as emo as Dawson was, we might feel a little bad about using him as a punchline for so many years. Now we can say, “Don’t worry, bro, Dawson’s cool with it. He only cries on the inside.”
