Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman Dead at 49

Jeff Hannerman, guitarist for Slayer, died from liver failure on Thursday in California. He was 49. In a Facebook post, Slayer writes, “Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace.”

“Wait, liver failure from alcohol addiction?,” you probably asked matter-of-factly. No, actually, possibly from a spider bite he suffered two years ago.

In 2011, Hanneman was bit in the arm by a spider and left the wound untreated. Contracting necrotizing fascilitis, he almost lost his arm and was put in a medically induced coma. Jeff then underwent operations to remove the dead and dying tissue from his arm. He was plagued by health problems for the next two years but seemed to be recovering. He was even recently writing new songs for an upcoming Slayer album.

There’s no hard evidence that the spider bite was directly related to the liver failure but in my opinion it probably was. Mainly because spiders are assholes.
