Gym Teacher Charged With 30 Counts of Statutory Rape

Megan Mahoney, 24, a former basketball coach and gym teacher was arrested Monday for having sex with a 16-year-old student for more than 2 months. She was charged with 30 counts of statutory rape. That’s about half the number of high fives the 16-year-old got from friends.

Mahoney romped with the teen “on numerous occasions, that is at least two times per week during the period,” court papers claim.

She also was charged with four counts of “criminal sexual act” because of mutual oral sex that she and the boy allegedly engaged in “at least two times per month during said period.”

Some of the encounters took place on school grounds. Mahoney resigned after the kid’s ex-girlfriend saw them at a pizzeria and called the cops. The kid said it all started when she offered to coach him in basketball. They ended up just driving around and doing it in her car.

He recalled boasting about his experiences to his best friend and several other kids, who responded by saying, “How awesome — good job.”

And because laws are arbitrary.

The sex charges against Mahoney are felonies that each carry a maximum of four years in jail.

I’m sure this will affect this 16-year-old for the rest of his life. It’s not easy living with the nickname, “The Legend.”

When its an adult male the newspapers attack and the man gets 20 years or more in prison. If it’s a woman there’s a lot of joking about it and the max prison sentence is four years. I call that a double standard!

I think that when a perpetrator is a male and the victim is a female there is more damage than the other way round. I’m not saying that is my view but socially if a woman get sexually assault a lot of people would say or think at least that she’s a slut and she asked for it but the other way round the guy looks like a hero because he was sex with an older woman and probably out of his league, I’m not talking about the psychological damage, but from this point of view the male victim gets… Read more »

I don’t believe at all that a woman who is sexually assaulted is a slut. And the last statement in this article is just bad journalism. The snide joke about him being damaged for life due to the nickname ‘The Legend’ is absolutely ridiculous. He will be damaged for life, or at least a very long time. He will grow to have unrealistic sexual expectations, likely causing difficulties for him in the future with relationships. He may never grow to get married and have children because of this. Female victims of statutory rape are indeed affected. But their reasoning likely… Read more »
