Val Kilmer Will Star With Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun 2’, According to Val Kilmer

As a film snob I don’t even know how to react to this.

I feel like we’ve entered some kind of parallel universe bizarro world from which there is no escape.

In a Facebook status posted last night, Kilmer said that he will star opposite Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman in the Top Gun sequel produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. In a plot twist so twisty I think I’m about to be sick, this film will be directed by Francis Ford Coppola, one of the most legendary filmmakers of all time. He was the genius behind Apocalypse Now and The Godfather.

I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script…"It's starring Gene…

None of the other key players mentioned by Kilmer, Tom Cruise, Francis Ford Coppola, Gene Hackman and Jerry Bruckheimer, have responded to what seems like it could be a rather premature announcement. However, while promoting Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Tom Cruise spoke with cautious optimism about a possible sequel. He said:

“If we can figure it out, it would be fun to do.”

But Tom Cruise is out of his goddamn mind, so who knows.

Val Kilmer played “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise’s “Maverick” Mitchell in the classic 1986 film Top Gun. Over the summer, the CEO of the production company behind the maybe sequel, Skydance’s David Ellison, let it be known that a script was being created with Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, in mind.

Ellison said at the time:

“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”

So if you’re into Maverick on Maverick directed by Francis For Coppola, get ready. Maybe.
