Willow Smith’s Surprise Debut Album is DOPE

If you know me, you know that I wholeheartedly am behind whatever wacky s**t the Smith kids wanna get into. Whether they want to build pyramids or f**k with people or drop surprise albums, I am here for it. That doesn’t mean I can’t admit that when I heard Willow Smith dropped a new album, I got flashbacks to “Whip My Hair” and started to pray for a quick and painless death rather than 12 tracks of that s**t.

However, I gotta say, her new album, Ardipithecus, is nothing like that. She’s on that R&B futurism grind and it’s pretty tight. Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation released the album. It includes 15 tracks, 14 of which she wrote, and 10 of which she produced. Willow Smith is in control of her sound and I have nothing but respect for her and Ardipithecus.

In an interview with The Fader, Willow explained:

“‘Ardipithecus Ramidus’ is the scientific name of the first hominid bones found on earth. I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state. Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs. Ardipithecus is my first album in my entire career and it makes me feel so blessed to be able to share my evolution with the LightEaters as I continue excavating my inner worlds…”

I love this kid. Check out this FKA Twigs-ish, “F Q-C #8”, track off her new album.
