Ricky Gervais’ Joke About Ben Affleck Even Made Matt Damon Laugh

Ricky Gervais was supposed to come in and bring his edgy humor to the Golden Globes. He had a sprinkling of good jokes. It’s not as funny, though, when everyone expects to be made fun of. Like, ohh, what is Ricky gonna say now? And if he goes in on you, you play along because you know it’s all fun and games. People weren’t caught off-guard basically.

Gervais did have a good dig at Ben Affleck. This was right before introducing Matt Damon. First, Gervais made fun of The Martian‘s nomination for Best Musical or Comedy. A totally fitting category for a movie about an astronaut who nearly dies by himself on Mars after being left stranded by his crew. Spoiler: There aren’t any musical numbers in it, so I guess that makes it a comedy?

Then, Gervais described Damon as “The only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.” Zing!

Damon couldn’t help but laugh.
