What Trump Sounds Like Trying to Form Intelligible Words

Donald Trump hasn’t got this speaking thing down yet. Today, everybody’s talking about the Associated Press interview and transcript. More proof that the guy might have dementia.

In it, Trump goes off on many (16 to be exact) “unintelligible instances.” In other words, no one knew what the hell Trump was saying.

From his interview:

Gen. (Jim) Mattis (the defense secretary) said, “I’ve never seen anything like this,” because he had to sign the ultimate (unintelligible) … He had to sign the ultimate, you know. He said, “I’ve never seen anything like this before, as long as I’ve been in the military.” You know, that kind of cutting.

Haha..Mattis signed the ultimate what…Don’t leave us hanging. The ultimate “you know”. You know, that ultimate thing.

Or this one:

AP: Is that something you’re going to take on?

TRUMP: (unintelligible) But as we order the other ones, because they want to order 12, the other ones are going to come in much less expensive. …

There’s even more, but this last one will do.

AP: Can I ask you, over your first 100 days — you’re not quite there yet — how do you feel like the office has changed you?

TRUMP: Well the one thing I would say — and I say this to people — I never realized how big it was. Everything’s so (unintelligible) like, you know the orders are so massive. I was talking to —

To be fair, the whole transcript has about a million and three words, so it’s not like Trump was bumbling through the whole interview.

Trump, though, is more calculated than you think. Richard Wilson, a professor of anthropology and law at UConn School of Law says “it’s not uncommon for populist politicians to speak in such a clunky style.”

There are two reasons, says Wilson, this style of speech is effective: “They [populists] want to speak like regular folks and so they often use phrases that are ungrammatical so as to seem popular,” he explains. “But they also do it because it forces us to listen more closely.”

Or he could be mentally shallow.

Which brings us to this.

Twitter user Christopher Price took a Trump video and edited out the speaking to just the random breathing and pauses he makes between words.

Poor Melania, this is what she hears when they have sex.
