Henry Golding Cast in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’

Okay, this is late news, but Crazy Rich Asians found its male lead. Henry Golding got cast as Nick Young, the lead in Kevin Kwan’s bestselling book that Jon Chu’s turning into a movie.

Golding’s bio says he’s “of mixed heritage, his father is from England and his mother from the ‘Iban’ tribe in Sarawak, Malaysia.”

The Hollywood Reporter summarizes the story’s plot:

The story follows Rachel Chu… an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s (Golding) hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.

Constance Wu plays Rachel Chu and Kevin Kwan co-produces. Sounds like it could be a good movie. The book’s got four stars on Amazon and NY Times and NPR had good reviews of it years ago.

This the first all-Asian movie in how many years? You can bet Asians will show up and white people won’t. That’s what the polling says.
