300 took first place at the box office this weekend. The movie adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel sold $70 million worth of tickets. All the more impressive was how this rated R movie bested the previous record holder for the month, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (PG), by $2 million. Not only that, 300 is now the third highest R rated movie behind The Matrix Reloaded and The Passion of the Christ. As for the other movies, Wild Hogs held the number two spot with only $28 million in sales and Bridge to Teribithia took in $6.9 million.

Warner Bros. has begun salivating over future films in this genre. In fact, rumors are flying that even Dreamworks plans to release a CGI spectacle that will break barriers in family oriented homoeroticism. Somewhere out there, Jake Gyllenhaal nods in approval.

A bunch of stills from 300 after the jump.

You haven’t heard of 300?! Well, you need to watch the trailer. Apple just put this PG version on their website, but it’s still awesome. If anyone from Warner Bros. is reading this, for the love of god, release the extended uncut R trailer.

If you haven’t heard about this movie, it’s based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name. Here’s a synopsis from iMDB:

In 480 B.C. the Spartan King Leonidas and his royal guard of 300 readied themselves for battle against the mightiest force to ever come out of Persia. The Spartans were outnumbered one hundred thousand to one, but sometimes choosing where to fight makes ALL the difference in the world! Enough of a difference to unite a nation just in time.

Go check out the trailer. It has everything a guy could want. Blood, action, awesome visuals and disfigured women making out. It looks almost like the trailer they showed at Comicon minus a lot of nudity and sex. Damn you Warner Bros.

So rather than sit in my nice comfy intermittently air conditioned room, I decided to go to Comic-Con because what better way is there to spend a Saturday than to go to a convetion where the crowds are huge and horrible body odor is all around you everywhere you go. Plus, I had the exciting time of walking in 100 degree heat at about 60% humidity which is what cool people do. Anyway, the sound of you caring is deafining. On to the 300 news. If you don’t want to know anything, then just don’t read anything after the jump.

This is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name. The synopsis is as follows.

In 480 B.C. the Spartan King Leonidas and his royal guard of 300 readied themselves for battle against the mightiest force to ever come out of Persia. The Spartans were outnumbered one hundred thousand to one, but sometimes choosing where to fight makes ALL the difference in the world! Enough of a difference to unite a nation just in time.

They showed the trailer/preview and it was not at all what I was expecting. Let me say that I have never read the graphic novel and I thought that this would be just another piece about the Spartans in the same style as Troy or Gladiator. How wrong I was. What I saw not only kicked ass, but it had a really different flavor. My brain was malfunctioning at the time, but I was able to remember some bits and pieces. The film is stylized and the fight scenes that I saw were awesome. There were very few if any quick cut fight scenes. The kind where they cut up a fight scene so quickly you can’t even tell what’s going on. Also, lots of blood everywhere.

It started out with a shot of a pile of baby skulls. The narrator tells you that for every Spartan that is born, they are checked for defects. If any are found, they are cast away. The story focuses on a Spartan going through different stages of his life training. At one point he faced off against a wolf during training. They then reveal that they must battle against the Persians and what ensues is just mayhem. I saw tits (small) on more than one occasion. There were a couple sex scenes that I can remember. Not explicit, not boring, more like doggy style, but angry doggy style I think. Don’t ask me why I remember this. Another scene showed two women making out. You could see half her face, but when she turned to show her full face you could see the sick scarring from who the hell knows what. One thing that sticks in my mind is a big black dude talking, but the soldier he was talking to didn’t want to hear it so he just kicked him into some black abyss. Once again, lots of stabbing and blood flying everywhere.

I have to say again that this teaser was awesome. Probably one of the best and most interesting teasers I’ve seen. If you have a hard time visualizing what I described, then I’m not suprised. Click on the banner to get an idea.

Note: I stole the poster picture from the awesome Joblo.com. I’m retarded when it comes to finding these things in the huge ass halls.
