Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Heroes) nonchalantly sashayed out of the closet in this week’s issue of New York Magazine. Speaking about his eight-month role last year in Angels in America,

What was terrifying?
Just the sheer scale of the play to begin with. And then I just think revisiting that work and revisiting the themes of that work at a time when the political and social climate of the country is shifting so dramatically and so irreversibly, to really come up against the echoes of that hatred and that bigotry and that fear that still exists in our culture, just in a different context now — you know, I feel it was just a really interesting exploration for me.

Doing that play made me realize how fortunate I am to have been born when I was born. And to not have to witness the decimation of an entire generation of amazingly talented and otherwise vital men. And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like I — there’s still so much work to be done. There’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed. The undercurrent of that fear and that, you know, insidiousness still is swarming. It’s still all around us. To revisit that world at all, it took a toll on me. It definitely was an incredible experience but it was really daunting at times. NY Mag

And this is how you announce you’re gay. Casually dropping it in a weekly magazine. Not by putting your airbrushed face on the cover of PEOPLE. It’s much more dignified this way but less flamboyant. Which is ironic, I guess. Although you could go the Ricky Martin route and bounce around the beach with your gay workout buddy in your speedos for a few years causing everyone to speculate and then come out of the closet on your website when no one cares anymore.

Zachary Quinto is best known for playing Sylar on Heroes and Spock on Star Trek but now he’ll probably be known for being that asshole in interviews. Zachary is currently the star of STC’s Off Broadway revival of Kushner’s Angels in America. I have no idea what that sentence meant but Vulture interviewed him. The interview, of course, went swimmingly.

What’s your post-show ritual?
I like to take showers after the show. And then I read. I’m reading Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom, like the rest of the world. But all these questions are too personal, sorry.

Let’s get less personal then. What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Still too personal. Sorry.

Is there anything you feel okay talking about?
I’d rather just talk about Tony. I’m just beginning to learn from him, how to string together so many cohesive, multidimensional, layered, and unique thoughts. [Quinto ends interview.]

To be fair, he may have been joking. But on the other hand, favorite ice cream flavor is actually a very personal question. You might as well be asking someone how they masturbate (sobbing with a belt around my neck).

Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the upcoming Star Trek movie, ran into technical difficulties while trying to do the live long and prosper Vulcan salute. Aww, crap. I need to kick my own ass after writing that.

Sources say Quinto couldn’t train his fingers to do the “V” even when he tied rubber bands around them. Eventually, J.J. Abrams “glued Zachary’s fingers together during filming.”

This may be another thing devout Star Trek fans may find issue with. It’s a slap in the face for a man to play Spock and not be able to do the Vulcan sign naturally. I wouldn’t worry too much though. Based on my stereotypes of Trekkies, it’s also dishonorable to have sex with their Seven of Nine real doll without first professing their love to it in Klingon.
