Roman Polanski was arrested for drugging and butt raping a girl in 1977 but he fled to France on the eve of his sentencing. The US has been trying to extradite him ever since. They got close in September 2009 when Polanski was jailed in Zurich in September 2009.
Alas, things started looking grim when they let Polanski be put under house arrest in his chalet located in the ski resort of Gstaad. Today Switzerland said they will not extradite Poalnski to face charges of unlawful sex because the Americans wouldn’t provide the documents they asked for.
Ms. Widmer-Schlumpf said the American authorities had rejected a request by her ministry for records of a hearing by the prosecutor in the case, Roger Gunson, in January 2010, which should have established whether the judge who tried the case in 1977 had assured Mr. Polanski that time he spent in a psychiatric unit would constitute the whole of the period of imprisonment he would serve.
“If this were the case, Roman Polanski would actually have already served his sentence and therefore both the proceedings on which the U.S. extradition request is founded and the request itself would have no foundation,” the Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement.
Time heals all wounds, apparently. Roman Polanski drugged and raped a girl yet numerous filmmakers, actors and actresses around the world wanted him free just because he directed a bunch of award winning films. If Polanski directed movies like The Toxic Avenger or Queen of the Damned, celebrities would be so offended that they’d be asking for his head.

This things piss me off, the guy is off the hook because he’s famous. I bet that if he were Mr. nobody he’d be in jail and register as sex offender for life.
