By now you’ve heard that Rooney Mara (Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, The Social Network) was cast as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She beat out established actors like Ellen Page, Natalie Portman, Mia Wasikowska, Emily Browning and Scarlett Johansson.
What you may not have heard is that Scarlett Johansson was gunning for the role despite being “freaked out by the nude scenes.” Sources said Fincher “was willing to work around that if she got the part.” Read: implied nudity. That would have been a big problem (for me) because… tits! Another problem would be Scarlett’s huge, luscious breasts. Once again, tits! Do they ever not complicate things?
But as fans of Larsson’s trilogy observe, even if Fincher decided to go with a name actress to play Lisbeth, Johansson’s Lamborghini lines would have posed a problem – at least for the first movie.
As one avid reader points out, Lisbeth is “skinny” and “flat as a board” in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” but gets breast augmentation in the second novel. Johansson would have needed cutting-edge visual effects, or at least a whole lot of gaffer’s tape.
The svelte Mara doesn’t appear to have the same impediments. As veteran movie-industry reporter Mike Fleming noted in a Deadline Hollywood post Monday, Mara was not only Fincher’s “first choice” for the part. She had also previously worked with the director on the hotly anticipated movie about Facebook, “The Social Network.” Fleming said Mara is “a strong match,” the “right age” and “looks like Salander.”
This may be the only story in the history of the world where an actor’s small breasts helped further her career in Hollywood. I feel like I’m living a nightmare.
Well, when you have an established shape and look for a character, it’s best to stick to it.
wow what an informative and important news story LOL
