Smash Mouth used to be big in the 90’s but now they’ve been reduced to an organ monkey who’ll throw away their dignity in exchange for a little attention. Which is why Something Awful started a “Smash Mouth, eat the eggs” meme which has turned into something very real.
Once fans started blowing up Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell’s phone, email, Facebook and Twitter to goad him into accepting the challenge, Steve came up with a plan that if fans raised $10,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, he’d eat the 24 eggs, preferably hard boiled. In less than 24 hours after launching a fundraising website on Causes.com, they’ve already brought in $6k.
I’m sure this is all in good fun for Steve which is why I propose we chant “Dance, monkey, dance!” while he eats his eggs. If I want to degrade a quasi-celebrity, I want them to know they’re being degraded.
