‘Homeland is Racist’ Graffiti Makes It Onto the Show

Homeland went looking for Arabic street artists to decorate their sets this season with authentic Arabic graffiti. They hired artists Heba Amin, Caram Kapp and Stone, who have criticized the show for its “inaccurate, undifferentiated and highly biased depiction of Arabs, Pakistanis, and Afghans.”

“It’s very important for us to address the idea that this kind of stereotyping is very dangerous because it helps form people’s perceptions of an entire region, a huge region, which in turn affects foreign policy. It was a way to claim back our image.”

“What if we could use this as an opportunity to be subversive, to make a point with it?”

Co-creator and showrunner Alex Gansa has been pretty chill.

“We wish we’d caught these images before they made it to air. However, as ‘Homeland’ always strives to be subversive in its own right and a stimulus for conversation, we can’t help but admire this act of artistic sabotage.”

Nice.

Homeland is more than racist. I have a beard, I’m Bengal, we do not believe in human sacrifice. Bengal literally means tiger people, we come from a history of cannibalism, and Homeland is the Christian convert of the Hebrew, Moab, to convert Hindu, and Muslims.
