Chris Hemsworth Shrank to the Size of a Normal Man

Chris Hemsworth posted a photo of himself on Instagram this weekend showing off his dramatic weight loss to play a shipwrecked first mate in In the Heart of the Sea.

He spoke to Entertainment Tonight about it in July, back when they were shooting the film,

“We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 500, 600, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it’s going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we’ll be together in our misery. I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment.”

That is absolutely crazy. Actors love to commit to roles like this, it’s so cute. And scary. It definitely confirms that any interest in being an actor myself is superficial, I would never be able to do anything like this.

The weird thing is that, while Hemsworth’s face is barely recognizable (does he look like Chad Michael Murray? He looks like someone. Taylor Kitsch!) – even ignoring his Biblical beard-and-hair situation – his body sort of just shrank into a normal man’s body? He’s definitely thin but it’s no Christian Bale in The Machinist, you know? I would stare at pictures of Bale’s bony bod whenever I wanted to scare myself.

Anyway, In the Heart of the Sea is the true story of a whale and ship accident that inspired Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. It comes out December 11.
