‘MST3K’ Relaunches, See You on the Satellite of Love

Everyone has their favorite cult classic(s)–Pulp Fiction, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Half Baked, Mean Girls, Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3k), and so on. The best part about cults is that there is one for everyone… if you look hard enough.

Having spent most of my life (thus far (with no intention of change)) cyclically and evenly devoting myself to each of my obsessions, it seems I neglected to search the galaxy deep enough, and in doing so, neglected an entire cult following dedicated to my methods of ‘elegantly wasting time.’ If there is one thing I love more than watching good movies in silence, it’s watching really bad movies and narrating them with friends.

For those of you unfamiliar with the 11 season, 197 episode, decade-long span of MST3K, it chronicles two mad scientists, Dr. Laurence Erhardt and Dr. Clayton Forrester, who have kidnapped, Joel Robinson, a janitor at their workplace, and launched him into space upon the Satellite of Love. In it, he’s forced to watch B-list movies in order to quantify how bad movies can cause one to lose their minds. To keep himself company, Joel builds himself sentient robotic friends, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy and Cambot who ‘enjoy’ and comment on the films with him. If there has ever been anything that I wish to have created, this is it. I feel robbed, yet grateful, because it would have been a lot of work to join the writing crew as a 4-year old.

If any of this fustercluck clusterfuck sounds appealing to you, then I am pleased to welcome you into another cult following–prioritize your others accordingly. And just in the knick of time, I am also pleased to announce that Joel Hodgson (creator of the show) has launched a Kickstarter boasting $3.5 million dollars raised, $1.5 million more than asked for, and $2 million dollars away from the ultimate goal of a full 12-episode season.

To bring back the series with a ripe comedic vengeance, Patton Oswalt has been asked to join the cast along with Felicia Day and maybeeeeeeeeeeeee Jonah Ray (most important for all co-stars to rhyme).
