According to the Director of ‘Suicide Squad,’ Jared Leto’s Joker is Like So Good

Is Jared Leto’s Joker gonna blow Heath Ledger’s out of the water in Suicide Squad? According to the film’s director, David Ayer, totes. He recently basically got starry-eyed and, from the sound of his DC Vertigo Daily interview, kind of hard while talking about it.

“What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops.”

Ok. I mean, maybe I judged him too harshly for looking like some straight to Hot Topic DVD wet dream, but I’m honestly not willing to fall back on that judgement. The fact that Ayers called Leto’s performance “so powerful, so menacing, and so palpable,” that it brought the crew to distraction and Ayers would have to get everybody back on track almost makes me even less confident about this whole deal.

Leto went full character actor, even sending his co stars dead animals, which I’m pretty sure is illegal. This all just feels like a bunch of dudes trying way too hard to me, but maybe I’ll be surprised.

Suicide Squad comes out in theaters August 5, 2016.

Yes, Mr. Leto is a “method actor” in the tradition of Lee Strasberg, and has applied this technique successfully in both character actor and lead roles.

The writing has gone downhill on this blog; I’m not going to take back or back track on that judgment.
