Jared Fogle Keeps Getting Ickier and Ickier

Jared Fogle, human garbage bag and previous Subway spokesman, thinks prison is too hard and wants to get out. As such, he had his lawyers appeal his 16 year sentence. If 16 years sound harsh to you and you think hmmmm, maybe he didn’t mean it, let me be the one to remind you how this man lured his victims. From court filings surrounding the case, we learn that:

repeated text messages and emails showed Fogle had a pattern: he found adult escorts through the Internet, developed relationships with them, and offered them finder’s fees to provide him with access to minors for commercial sex.

Cited text messages show some of Fogle’s true depravity and knowledge of what he was doing. In a text conversation with an adult escort, Fogle is cited as saying:

I’ll pay you big for a 14- or 15-year-old.

And in another text:

Did you find me some young girls or boys? If they can and you get me 16 or below, I’ll give you 400 at least.

Fogle was willing to pay extra for proof of the child’s age. While his defense argued that the punishment seemed excessive, claiming that Fogle was very unlikely to become a repeat offender, government lawyers argued that the punishment was standard and that the judge had fully understood the case and its heinous perpetrator. Fogle was not limited in his range of crime activity as his abuses occurred in many cities including Richmond, Kansas City and Las Vegas. The judge is cited as saying that Fogle’s punishment is suitable considering he:

went to great lengths to engage in commercial sex acts with underage minors. He bought and offered plane tickets. He reserved and paid for the hotel rooms, made arrangements for the commercial sex acts.

He fantasized about these actions for long lengths of time and put much effort into making sure they were carried out to fit his perfect fantasy. I’m not one for harsh prison sentences, but what are the alternatives for a man dead-set on harming children? He deceived the public for nearly a decade (it is not possible to lose weight on Subway diet), he carefully planned his crimes and still seems to feel pretty good about it. How do you prevent it from happening again? How do you help a man be better when he insists that nothing is wrong?
