John Oliver Just Made 9,000 People’s Lives a Lot Easier

John Oliver has talked a big game since leaving The Daily Show and moving to primetime Sunday night on HBO with his own show in 2014. It’s been two years and Last Week Tonight seems to only be getting better. And last night he just made television history by forgiving $15 million dollars in medical debt that he bought for less than $15,000 under a shell company he calls, Central Asset Recovery Professionals, or CARP. And Oliver’s reason for that is just as clever as ever:

After the bottom-feeding fish.

Oh, Obviously.

It is pretty clear by now debt buying is a grimy business, and badly needs more oversight, because as it stands any idiot can get into it. And I can prove that to you, because I’m an idiot, and we started a debt-buying company. And it was disturbingly easy.

The $15 million ‘prize’ beats out the time Oprah gave away those cars by almost double and these people won’t be shackled with thousands of dollars in taxes. The world is fucked, television show hosts don’t have to make it harder. Oliver closed out the show with a:

F**k you, Oprah!
