‘Wizard of Oz’ Munchkins Groped Judy Garland on Set

Judy Garland was not in Kansas anymore on the set of Wizard of Oz. Because munchkins aren’t groping 16-year olds in Kansas. At least, I assume they aren’t. And if they are, they’re hopefully being punished.

This news comes via Garland’s ex-husband Sid Luft, who tells the tale in his memoir.

“They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small. They would make Judy’s life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress. The men were 40 or more years old.”

And we wonder why Judy always felt like a victim and turned to pills. Getting groped by small 40-year-olds when you’re 16 is sure to traumatize anyone.

Luft, Garland’s third of five husbands, began writing his memoir when he and Garland split in 1965. He passed away in 2005 and the memoir never got out until now. In it, he tells how Judy tried committing suicide on a number of occasions and battled her addiction with drugs, which was her eventual cause of death.

Although Sid claimed his wife would never admit she was a substance abuser, she had confessed it was virtually impossible for her to work in front of the cameras without some kind of medication.

Maybe there is a reason why this memoir was never published. Garland has been dead for almost 50 years and Luft lived until 2005. Maybe he didn’t want to paint Judy in such a negative and tragic light and cash in on it? But if one man won’t, another man will.
