Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones, said this in 2011:
“As far as sci-fi and fantasy, I love that genre because there are so many things you can do, like rip someone’s tongue out of their throat and get away with it. And rape beautiful women.”
And in 2011, no one cared because it was a true statement.
In 2017, it’s still a true statement, but now everyone cares because Harvey Weinstein ruined rape in Hollywood. Momoa was forced by someone to apologize for his remarks.
I mean, he probably wasn’t too disappointed in himself, given that it took him six years to apologize, but whatever.
I don’t even think he needed to apologize. I understand where he was coming from in his comments. He was joking about the things you can get away in the genre and no one cares because they know it’s fiction and fantasy. They’ve been raping women on Game of Thrones for years, no one makes Game of Thrones apologize or delete the footage. It’s just part of the show and people hate the guy who rapes the woman.
If everyone who has made a rape joke in the last ten years is going to have to apologize, I’m just going to go ahead and apologize for a joke I probably made after watching The O.C. sexual assault scene involving Mischa Barton. I don’t even know if I made a joke, but I was a high school kid watching The O.C. so I probably had some kind of sarcastic comment. I apologize for my comment.
Alright, now everyone else who has made a joke, go ahead and apologize. It doesn’t matter the context, rape is nothing to joke about in October 2017. When you made the joke, Harvey Weinstein had yet to be accused of multiple Hollywood rapes, so it was fine. But now that Harvey’s secrets are out, rape is no longer funny.
