I’ll Take ‘You’re Stoned Off Your Ass For $500, Alex’

Alex Trebek is a national treasure, which is quite the feat for someone who isn’t even from this country. The Canadian television host has been hosting the syndicated game show Jeopardy for 34 years, and it’s as big a part of the cultural zeitgeist as anything. If not for Trebek’s Jeopardy, we never would have had those Will Ferrell Celebrity Jeopardy SNL skits, just for a start.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Trebek shared what might the second greatest pot brownie story I’ve ever heard. The first is from Parks and Recreation, if you’re wondering.

As the story goes, when Trebek first arrived in California, he attended a swanky party at a friend’s beach house in Malibu and came across some delicious-looking brownies on display. Now Trebek, despite at one time resembling a ’70s porn star, was no hippie and hadn’t dabbled much in recreational marijuana, let alone potent edibles. So needless to say, he had no idea what he was in for.

“It was by accident! I didn’t know what they were,” he tells me. “I had just arrived in California and went to a friend’s house for dinner, and there were brownies. I love brownies—I’m a chocoholic—and I didn’t realize that they were hash brownies. And… whoa. That threw me for a loop. I took down about a half-dozen. The dinner party was on a Friday, and I was not able to leave that house until Sunday afternoon. I spent the next day and a half in bed. It was not a good trip, and I have not done any of that stuff since!”

People always overdo the edibles. Luckily it’s basically impossible to overdose on marijuana, you literally cannot consume it fast enough because a theoretical lethal dose of THC is astronomically high. It’s actually easier to overdose on water than it is on pot. But pot makes you hungry and when you bake it into some truly excellent brownies, you end up with Alex Trebek running around your house all weekend with his pants tied around his neck demanding everything you say be in the form of a question.
