Vin Diesel Reached ‘Clarity’ with The Rock Before Getting His Candy Ass Kicked

In 2016, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Vin Diesel beefed over the direction of the Fate of the Furious film. It started with a now-deleted Instagram photo with a caption that read “Some [male co-stars] conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken s**t to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses.”

Those who watched the film noticed that the two stars rarely interacted with one another. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson confirmed that the two didn’t shoot scenes together.

How close was The Rock to laying the smackdown on Vin Diesel? Not as close as rumored. The two set testosterone aside and talked it out like men.

“Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer. And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.

“But I wish him all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have.” He considers this, then lets out a big, sly laugh. “Actually, you can erase that last part about ‘no ill will.’ We’ll just keep it with the clarity.”

Tyrese still holds a grudge.

Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of Central Intelligence and Skyscraper, said he’s only seen Rock get upset once on set.

“…there was a miscommunication about when he would be done shooting, and he wasn’t gonna be able to get on his flight to go see his little one. It was the most upset I’ve ever seen him. But the way he handled it was really cool. He brought everybody together in the middle of the set and said, ‘I’m disappointed in all of us that we’re here at this point. How can we solve this and move forward?’

“It was pretty tense,” Thurber says. “He’s a big guy – everyone was staring at their shoes. But what he didn’t do was say ‘screw it’ and storm off, or sit in his trailer and have his people make a fuss. He’s a giant movie star – he could just walk out. But he called everybody together and said, ‘Let’s figure this out.’ I gained a lot of respect for him in that moment.”

Johnson is currently making 100 different films while Vin Diesel is repeating “I am Groot” a million times.
