Can They Just Go Ahead and Make Idris Elba the Next James Bond?

Four years after the rumor first started, Idris Elba is definitely going to be the next James Bond. Definitely.

The Daily Star reports that director Antoine Fuqua said producer Barbara Broccoli believes “it’s time” for a minority to takeover the role of James Bond and that “it will eventually happen.” Fuqua said, “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

We’ve heard this story since the great Sony email hack of 2014. At that time, then-studio co-chair Amy Pascal said, “Idris should be the next Bond.” Nothing came of it as Daniel Craig decided to keep playing the spy despite hating the role.

Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston, Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, and who knows who else have also been rumored for the role. But the conversation always seems to come back to Elba.

Craig will star in his last Bond film, Bond 25, when it hits theaters in November 2019. Unless he doesn’t want to get shown up by Tom Cruise, who is still doing his own stunts for Mission Impossible, he’ll finally step away from the role. That means, after years of speculation, someone will have to make a final decision on the next Bond.

It should be Elba. I’ll settle for Hardy. I refuse to watch if it’s Hiddleston, Fassbender or Cavill.

I, too, would prefer Elba. I don’t care about him being a minority. A black or white Bond means nothing to me. My sole concern is: does the actor have what it take to pull it off. Elba has what it takes. As does Hiddleston and Fassbender. I don’t want Hardy.
