Ruby Rose Quits Twitter Because Fandom Is Terrible

You know, it’s funny how the reason people are being dicks to someone shades the way that it gets covered by the media. When Star Wars star Kelly Marie Tran left social media, it was because of “harassment”. Now that it’s Ruby Rose people hated of of Twitter, it’s because of “backlash.” The difference is that the people being shitty to Ruby Rose for being cast as the star of Batwoman are doing it for “woke” reasons, while the people being shitty to Star Wars actors were doing it because the movie was shitty.

Ruby Rose left Twitter, leaving this message on the way out:

Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.

When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other…Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially.

I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.

Part of the problem with ‘woke’ intersectional identity politics is that people are reluctant to mention that some members of certain communities can be, for lack of a better word, huge assholes. For example, the people who have a problem with Ruby Rose’s casting are almost exclusively lesbians. I want to preface the rest of this very carefully, lest it be taken the wrong way. Certain pockets of lesbian pop culture fandom are incredibly toxic. No more toxic than any other part of fandom, mind you, but still toxic; it just doesn’t get as much coverage because they use social justice talking points to be bullying assholes.

For example, the things Rose was bullied about by toxic nerds were not being Jewish because Batwoman is a Jewish character, not being the ‘right’ kind of lesbian and being cast to appeal to a straight audience. I don’t know what kind of lesbian Ruby Rose is and I don’t know why being that kind of lesbian is bad, and if I was concerned about my woke cred I probably wouldn’t comment on it. It’s not as cut and dry as Leslie Jones being harassed by a bunch of racists at the direction of some dork trying to turn Milo into a mononym; Maybe they’re right and Ruby Rose is the wrong kind of lesbian.

Only they’re not right and there’s no right or wrong way to be a lesbian. But I do actually know what they mean, in this case, by calling Rose “not the right kind of lesbian.” They’re mad that she’s gender fluid, and claim that makes her not a lesbian.

It’s actually a very small number of people that are saying this, by the way. A Change.org petition being passed around the “#recastbatwoman” hashtag has only attracted around 350 signatures in a little under a week. And it’s mostly just one woman doing all the tweeting.

The thing about bullies is they come from all walks of life. Just because someone has the right politics or knows how to word the things that they say to be inline with social justice rhetoric doesn’t mean that they aren’t a bully.
