Chris Evans Appears to Be Done Playing Captain America

Marvel / Captain America

Avengers 4 has finished filming, and we still don’t know what it’s going to be called or who’s going to play Batman in it. I’m kidding, of course, but I could hear you starting to scroll down to the comments section to call me an idiot for not knowing the difference between Marvel and DC. I do know, I just don’t care. Okay, I care, but that’s only because DC’s movies are all bad and Marvel’s movies are basically okay.

Chris Evans left a rather cryptic tweet about wrapping production on the film.

Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.

It’s very hard to read that and not come to the conclusion that Evans is leaving the Marvel Universe. The only way to be more blatant about it is if he said “I’m leaving the Marvel Universe after Avengers 4.”

This raises the question of what’s going to happen, and the rumors are pointing to his death. If you think about it, Marvel’s done something like 20 movies and only had one meaningful character death, in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It would be extremely strange if the sequel to the movie where they killed everybody ended with them having actually killed nobody. We know, because we’re not idiots, that pretty much all of the characters killed in Infinity War are going to come back to life somehow. A lot of them have movies on Marvel’s schedule after Avengers 4. But Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are at the end of their contracts so it would make sense for at least one of them to be killed off. Evans, who was in Fantastic Four before playing Captain America, has expressed his interest in doing films that don’t involve spandex tights, and with this tweet, it seems pretty certain that he’s leaving Captain America behind.
