Rebel Wilson Pissed Off Mo’Nique by Claiming to Be the First ‘Plus-Sized’ Actress to Headline a Rom-Com

Rebel Wilson put her foot in her mouth in a recent appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show when she said she was the first “plus-sized” actress to star in a romantic comedy (the upcoming Isn’t It Romantic). I’ll bet you thought I was going to follow that up with some cheap fat joke like “It was quite a surprise because she hasn’t seen her feet since 1996.” Look, this is a classy operation and I don’t do things like that. What I do is feign indignation so that I can still make the cheap joke but pretend to be offended by it and therefore remain woke.

Of course, the problem with this is that Rebel Wilson isn’t the first fat actress to be the star of a romantic comedy. Users on Twitter were quick to point out that both Mo’Nique and Queen Latifah have been the leads in romantic comedies, and that Last Holiday, starring Queen Latifah, was maybe not the most successful film but her performance won her a lot of praise as an actress.

And then Rebel doubled down on saying dumb s**t.

Hunh. I wonder what Mo’Nique and Queen Latifah have in common that makes them different from Rebel Wilson. What could it be? I can’t put my finger on what makes them different that would make them not count in Rebel Wilson’s mind.

Some Twitter users also pointed out that there have been plus-sized rom-com leads for decades, at least as far back as Ricki Lake. Which is a really good point. Rebel Wilson clearly wants to market herself as the first successful fat actress, which isn’t true for a few reasons, but the most immediate being that she hasn’t been all that successful. She’s been a strong supporting actress, but there’s no evidence she can carry anything on her own. But Matt Lucas will probably let her crash with him if this blows up in her face.
