Ridley Scott Is Making a ‘Gladiator’ Sequel

Of all the films I wasn’t expecting a sequel to, Gladiator is pretty high on the list. Mainly because (spoilers) both the protagonaist and the antagonist kill each other at the end of the film. Deadline reported that the sequel will follow a minor character from the original film who was inspired by Russell Crowe’s character.

Gladiator 2 will follow the continuing story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), The youth was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the weaselly son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father seized the throne and wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus, who though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great beyond to reunite with his slain wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family, and left a strong impression on the young Lucius.

Did anyone remember that Gladiator won the Oscar for Best Picture? I mean, sure it was a good movie, but did like, no other good movies at all come out in the entire year 2000? Man, I guess not. Well, High Fidelity and Almost Famous. Still.

Sources said Paramount will be the studio developing the project, and Universal has the option to co-finance. DreamWorks is out of it.

They got Peter Craig to write the script, and he just wrote the sequel to Top Gun and a remake of Logan’s Run, so this sort of thing seems right up his alley. I just hope he doesn’t get this and Top Gun confused and put a bunch of shirtless Gladiators standing in ditches into the script, that could be a disaster.
