‘Christmas in Hollis’, the Best Christmas Song Ever, Was Written While Rev Run Was High

It’s December, and that means it’s time to listen to Christmas music until you’re ready to slit your wrists. Seriously, Christmas is over two weeks away and if I hear that Paul McCartney song one more time I’m going to throw a shopping cart through the PA system of whatever grocery store I’m in when it comes on.

But Christmas songs are not all bad. Run DMC’s ‘Christmas in Hollis’ is a bop and I love hearing it every year. Just not too many times.

Joseph Simmons, known to you and I as Reverend Run, recently told Page Six about the interesting circumstances around writing the Christmas classic.

“I was in my new house that I just purchased in Hollis [Queens]. I was by myself. And I look down at my plate — it was eggs, jelly and toast. I just finished my breakfast and I wrote the rap.”

Added Rev Run, “I look down [at the lyrics] and I thought, ‘Wow this is crazy.’ I wrote that in like one minute.”

Page Six added that Run mentioned he was high at the time, and you have to respect a man of God who gets high before breakfast. Let’s all be glad he is because ‘Christmas in Hollis’ is the best thing to ever happen to Christmas. Okay, second best.
