Mariah Carey Just Broke the Record for Most Streamed Song, Toppling Drake and XXXTentacion

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” took the singer and her co-writer Walter Afanasieff 15 minutes to write, and I think it shows. I mean, it’s fine as far as horny Christmas songs go, but there’s nothing special going on here besides Mariah Carey’s voice. Seriously, you get Iggy Azalea to sing that and you’re going to want to blow your brains out after 30 seconds.

But as it is, people really like that song. So much, in fact, that it’s Spotify’s most streamed song in a single day ever.

I for one am glad to see the back of Christmas. Even good Christmas songs I want to listen to, like, twice and then move on until next year. Which is rough because there’s a finite amount of Christmas songs and they start playing them in, like, August now. At least there are no songs for other holidays. No one is gathering around the bonfire singing Guy Fawkes Day carols.

XXXTentacion previously held the record as people were clamoring to listen to his music the day he died. Drake put out a new album this summer which was probably about feelings or how he cries when he watches Love Actually and Aurélia starts speaking English or something, but Mariah Carey beat them both with a song that’s about to turn 25 years old.

And thanks to the generous rates Spotify pays artists, Mariah will walk away from this Christmas Eve $20 richer. That’s some walking around money there.
