Did Disney Try to Kill Baby Yoda… Posts on Social Media?

The Mandalorian is a big hit for Disney+, and has displaced Stranger Things as the most popular show on all the streaming services. It’s not surprising because it’s genre fiction done right, a sort of Lone Wolf and Cub meets A Fistful of Dollars but with stormtroopers. While some people have had complaints about it, most everyone loves it and especially the adorable break-out star, Baby Yoda.

And who wouldn’t love that guy? He’s amazing.

But a few days ago he started disappearing from social media. As IGN reported, Baby Yoda GIFs, our most precious natural resource, were being pulled by GIPHY, seemingly at the direction of Disney.

Look at him, we have to protect him. Or her. I don’t know how to determine a Yoda’s gender.

As you may have gathered from the GIFs above, the adorable Baby Yodas were put back up. GIPHY gave the following statement about it.

“Last week, there was some confusion around certain content uploaded to GIPHY and we temporarily removed these GIFs while we reviewed the situation. We apologize to both Disney and Vulture for any inconvenience, and we are happy to report that the GIFs are once again live on GIPHY.”

That is a lot of words to not say anything. So let’s put on our tinfoil hats and try to figure out what happened here.

First, is Disney dumb enough, as a corporation, to pull down what amounts to free user-generated advertising for a brand that, let’s be honest, has not performed to the level they were hoping it would when they bought it? Absolutely yes they are, I don’t doubt it for a second.

Also, if Disney didn’t make some kind of copyright complaint, why would GIPHY pull down the adorable Baby Yodas? Do they hate joy and goodness? Companies like this don’t just pull things like this for an “investigation” for no reason.

Then again, there was a lot of blowback for this on social media, and it seems weird that GIPHY would take the blame for this if Disney had requested the GIFs be taken down.

We’ll probably never know what cause the Great Baby Yoda Blackout of 2019. Maybe it was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. The important thing is our precious child is safe now.

What “genius” at Disney thought it was a great idea to try killing Baby Yoda meme’s? How completely out of touch can a person be?
