Emilia Clarke Says You ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Forced Her Into Getting Naked for the Show

Look: it’s not exactly a secret that Hollywood tends to treat actresses pretty poorly, but it seems that the entertainment beast is happy to foist the blame on us lowly consumers rather than admit its own problems. In a piece covering an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, the Independent recapped how Emilia Clarke was pressured into a nude scene for Game of Thrones that she hadn’t agreed to beforehand.

If you somehow haven’t seen GoT, it has a surprising amount of nudity for a show about dragons and wizards and s**t. Still, Clark was hesitant to bare it all for lonely nerds. According to the Independent:

“I’ve had fights on set before where I’m like, ‘No, the sheet stays up,’ and they’re like, ‘You don’t wanna disappoint your Game of Thrones fans.’ And I’m like, ‘F**k you.’”

So if you were one of the vocal critics of GoT‘s reliance on sex to tell a by-the-numbers fantasy story, it turns out that’s our fault as the audience. Shame on you, us.

It’s a scummy bit of manipulation to use against anyone, let alone a young actress. But it does raise an interesting question: if the hypothetical expectations of an audience were enough to pressure some poor soul to get naked, why wasn’t it enough to get a better series finale?

Before anyone gets a part with re-occuring nudity they are informed before hand that it’s a re-occuring part of the role. I’m not sure why people who win that part then go “I was forced to do nudity” – you’re an actor, that was part of the job, you knew that in advance, someone else would have gladly taken that part if you weren’t comfortable with the job requirements.

She got famous for pretending to play with dragons and for showing her tits. She can’t pretend to play with dragons anymore, so now she is acting like she had no choice when showing them titties when the books did it far more often. But sure, ok.
