The Washington Redskins Will Have a New Name and Logo
The Washington Redskins issued a press release today saying that they will be changing the name and logo of their team because white people suddenly care after decades of pressure from Native American groups.
On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep sponsors, fans and community appraised of our thinking as we go forward.
Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.
Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.
Hilariously, to me, the press release was still on Redskins stationary so the name and logo they’re replacing are in the letterhead.
So what will the new team name and logo be?
I’m proposing the new name be The Fighting Whites. Yeah, remember that making the national news? That was almost 20 years ago. It was so long ago that when The Daily Show covered it the reporter was Stephen Colbert and he was still funny.
I’ve made a lot of hay about how these sorts of gestures, like banning an episode of The Golden Girls, are something no one wanted or asked for and are distracting from the real issues, but Native American groups have been asking sports teams to change their names and logos to something that isn’t based on Native stereotypes since the 1940s. It’s long overdue.
Now the problem is that the Kansas City Chiefs spent all their money on Patrick Mahomes and won’t have any left for someone to desigcan their new name and logo while the Redskins have avoided that problem by being terrible at football so they’ll have lots of time and energy and money to devote to their rebranding.

It is not Indians who don’t like the name. It is white liberals who say that Indians should not like the name. They have to explain to the Indians why they should be offended by it. Because, apparently, Indians aren’t smart enough to decide for themselves what offends them, and need white people to explain it to them.
