No More ‘Prison Break’: Wentworth Miller is Done Playing Straight Characters

A lot of actors, regardless of their sexual orientation, will tell you that they’d like to be able to play characters of any sexual orientation. There have been a good number of straight actors who have played gay characters and gay actors who have played straight characters, it’s really not something that requires you to only play characters of your own orientation.

Wentworth Miller is not one of those actors. Not only does he not want to be considered for straight characters, he says he’s done playing straight characters for good, including Michael Scofield from Prison Break.

Miller made a long, heartfelt Instagram post about it, saying “On a related note… I’m out. Of PB. Officially. Not because of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”

What Miller is saying, essentially, is if you want Wentworth Miller on your project, you need to have a gay (or, I would assume, bisexual) character in that project.

While Miller’s Arrowverse character Captain Cold was never explicitly any sexuality, he did have a mild flirtation with White Canary Sarah Lance at one point. When he came back as Citizen Cold from Earth X, however, he was explicitly gay and in a relationship with the superhero The Ray.

E! reported that Dominic Purcell, Miller’s on-screen compatriot in Prison Break, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, left a supportive message for his old friend.

“It was fun mate,” he wrote. “What a ride it was. Fully support and understand your reasoning. Glad you have made this decision for you health and your truth. Keep the posts coming…love ya brother.”

Miller had one piece of advice for people who were a little too attached to his Prison Break alter ego, as well.

If you’re hot and bothered bec you fell in love with a fictional straight man played by a real gay one…  That’s your work

I’m pretty sure Kristen Stewart is bisexual but I still feel the pain of any woman who feel he was speaking to them personally.
