Should Lucy Lawless Replace Gina Carano on ‘The Mandalorian’?

The Mandalorian, and Star Wars in general, is in a bit of a tough spot right now after the unceremonious firing of Gina Carano. Well, kind-of firing: as a guest star Carano wouldn’t have been under contract, she just would have gotten hired episode to episode when she appeared as Cara Dune on The Mandalorian.

The problem is that Cara Dune was really popular on the show, and for good reason. Carano gave a good performance and Dune was a very dimensionalized character who took part in a number of important plots and became one of Din Djarin’s few trusted associates. And people loved her, honestly.

The Cara Dune Black Series action figure, which is a six-inch, detailed line of Star Wars toys aimed more at collectors than children, sold out at $25 and is currently over $150 on Amazon with the news that a planned reprint was scrapped by toymaker Hasbro.

Fans don’t want to see the character go because of the actress and if we can have two Obi-Wan Kenobis and three Darth Vaders I don’t see why we can’t have a second Cara Dune.

The front-runner to replace Carano, at least with fans, is Lucy Lawless.

Lucy Lawless is a sex symbol, an LGBT icon, and an extremely talented actress who did plenty of action on Xena: Warrior Princess. Also, that yell thing that no one else seems to be able to do.

I think we’ve all tried and failed to do that one.

Would Lucy Lawless be a good choice? Should the character even be recast at all?

Personally, I’m not so sure they do need to recast Dune. Sure, she was one of the most prominent characters aside from Din and Grogu, but those characters are on the move throughout the galaxy. Before meeting Grogu, Din was something of a loner. It would be perfectly believable that he and Dune just didn’t cross paths or even that Dune was killed in the line of duty.

Jon Favreau and his team have endless stories to tell and they’ve got endless stories that don’t involve Cara Dune in them, too.

But if they do want to recast the fan-favorite character, I think Lucy Lawless is the best choice. She does have a passing physical resemblance in that she’s a brunette, tall and imposing physically. And we have seen time and again that she’s got the chops for a role like this.

I think it would probably be better to move on without Cara Dune, though. She played her role and got her man at the end of season two, she can ride off into the sunset while Din and Grogu meet new allies in season three.

I mean, it’s a show that took Boba Fett and Luke Skywalker and made them cooler. They’ll manage.
