This Rumor About Meghan Markle Running for President is Pretty Sus

Sometimes I get the feeling that the British press and perhaps some forces adjacent to the British Royal Family just kind of throw out whatever rubbish they can think of about Meghan Markle and hopes something sticks to the wall.

Everyone outside of the palace staff who has spoken to the press about the Duchess of Sussex has had nothing but good things to say about her, and the stories about her in the British press are getting more and more far-fetched.

The latest story is that Meghan wants to run for President of the United States. And not in the way that Kanye ran for president, she’s said to be seeking the nomination of the Democratic Party. This story is insane on its face: what kind of political party would nominate some B-list celebrity who is clearly unqualified for office just because they recognize them from TV or some bad movies?

Still, The Daily Mail quotes an anonymous “senior Labour official” from the Blair government as saying “’The Blairite, internationalist and Democratic party networks are buzzing with talk about Meghan’s political ambitions and potential backers.”

Now, Joe Biden will probably not seek re-election due to his advanced age and general terribleness, something that he’s gotten most people to overlook by virtue of not being Donald Trump because, hey, “barely competent” still has the word “competent” in it. But that leaves the 2024 election relatively wide open, you would think.

Of course, there’s probably someone else who would like to be the first female President of the United States. Not, not Hillary Clinton, someone with a remote chance of winning. Kamala Harris is the Vice President and despite her embarrassing performance in the 2020 primary, the nomination is essentially hers if she wants it.

No Democratic former Vice President has ever been denied the nomination if they seriously ran for it, no matter how overwhelmingly they were rejected by the party in their previous runs. If Bernie Sanders couldn’t beat Joe Biden, then Meghan Markle isn’t going to beat Kamala Harris.

That, of course, is assuming any of this is true, and I honestly don’t think it is. The Duchess did apparently have political aspirations at one point, but she didn’t pass the Foreign Service Officer test. I’m certain she’d like to be a political influencer, she and her husband were fairly vocal during the 2020 election, a big no-no for active royals, but I don’t think she honestly believes she would win a presidential election herself with no relevant experience, so soon after the last president with no relevant experience made a huge mess of everything.

I think some anonymous people want to make Meghan Markle look bad and I think the British press is happy to help which is why so many anonymous sources have so much damning gossip that never seems to pan out into anything real.

But whatever the situation, Kamala Harris, Nikki Haley and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are the most likely people to be the first female US President. Meghan Markle isn’t even really on the list, and she’s self-aware enough to know that.
