Carrie Fisher passed away a couple of weeks ago, but Hollywood doesn’t wait for anyone.
According to PageSix (via BBC Newsnight), Disney is negotiating with Fisher’s estate to resurrect Princess Leia via CGI, and possibly use her likeness to sell merchandise. Disney recently pulled this off with Peter Cushing in Rogue One.
BBC Newsnight’s Kirsty Wark weighed in.
“And with what might be regarded as unseemly haste, Disney is negotiating with the actor’s estate over her continued appearance in the franchise. If Disney gets the go-ahead, Carrie Fisher will join Peter Cushing, who, last month, fifteen years after his death, played a key role in ‘Rogue One’ as Grand Moff Tarkin. With computers, anything is possible, but is it desirable?”
I’m all for Star Wars continuing on the legacy of Leia, but maybe wait a month or two after her death? Fisher already shot her scenes for Episode 8, which means CGI wouldn’t come into place until Episode 9. So, what’s the rush?
Have a soul, Disney.
