‘Game of Thrones’ Creators Wonder What If the South Had Won and Slavery Was Legal

Do you love Games of Thrones? Well, you’re definitely going to love Confederate. What’s Confederate? It’s the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

But, instead of killing kings and queens, they’re going to kill blacks. No, I’m not joking about this. Here’s the plot from Variety:

“Confederate” chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone – freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.

To recap: two white guys who love to write murder, rape, and general shock scenes are going to make a show where the premise is “slavery is legal.”

This is the ultimate heat check. Benioff and Weiss are so bulletproof due to the success of Game of Thrones that they pitched a show based on slavery being legal. AND IT WORKED! If the producers and writers of The Office pitched this show, they’d never work in Hollywood again. And The Office is one of the best shows ever.

On the bright side, plenty of black actors are about to come into work. All they have to do is be comfortable with playing a slave. But not a historic slave who eventually becomes free. A slave where it’s a modern institution.
