Julia Roberts’ Half-Sister Died of a Drug Overdose

Julia Roberts’ half-sister Nancy Motes was found dead in a bathtub of a suspected drug overdose on Sunday in LA. Her body was discovered in a building in Brentwood, 20 miles from Malibu where she reportedly lived.

“It is with deep sadness that the family of Nancy Motes … confirms that she was found dead in Los Angeles yesterday of an apparent drug overdose,” the statement reads. “There is no official report from the Coroner’s office yet. The family is both shocked and devastated.”

In a 2013 interview, Motes said Julia Roberts was kind of an asshole to her. Specifically, she was “incredibly hurt and very sad” when Roberts mocked her weight. While Roberts sounds like some sort of monster, it was through her that Motes got a job as a production assistant on Glee. Though after moving to LA, she fell into a deep depression and ballooned up to 289 pounds. She underwent gastric bypass in 2010 bringing her weight down by almost half. At the time of the interview, she said her relationship with Julia was “a work in progress.”

“It’s not going to be fixed overnight, nor do I think it’s going to be fixed at this point by me just getting skinny,” Motes told the paper. At the same time, she said, “I love Julia absolutely, and I have no doubt she loves me.”

Motes planned to marry her fiance John Dilbeck this May and had most recently denied rumors that Julia wasn’t coming to the wedding because she didn’t approve of her fiance.
