Sarah Silverman Almost Died From a Sore Throat

Hello to hypochondriacs! Hello to the lazy people with suicidal tendencies! For the hypochondriacs, I have bad news. For you lazies, I have some great news. Sarah Silverman is out of the hospital when none of us even knew she went in. After a week spent in the ICU at LA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, we have the deets. In a long-winded Facebook post, Sarah discloses what happened, but for the sake of concision, take this quote:

Don’t even know why I went to the doctor, it was just a sore throat. But I had a freak case of epiglottitis.

And it could have killed her. With that, I have more fuel to add to the fire when I’m explaining to friends and family why I need to go to the doctor so often. But what is it? Anything ending in -itis is terrifying. The Daily Mail writes:

Epiglottitis is an inflammation of the epiglottis – the flap at the bottom of the tongue that stops food from falling into the windpipe. The disease constitutes a medical emergency because if the swelling is bad enough, it can completely cover the windpipe, cutting off air and causing death within minutes.

Ugh, what a miserable way to go. But I should probably die as I lived, don’t you think?

During her hospitalization, the comedian says she doesn’t remember much. She had to be intubated to keep her airway free, but she could not go to sleep because her blood pressure was too low. She was drugged out the ass.

They had to have my hands restrained to keep me from pulling out my breathing tube. My friend Stephanie said I kept writing “was I in an accident?”

Because she went to the doctor, she’s okay. If you don’t want to be okay, don’t go to the doctor.

So sad that that hack of a comics tongue couldn’t finish the job. Poetic irony right there.
