Matt Damon made it clear he’d never play Jason Bourne as long as Tony Gilroy was directing so the studio tapped Jeremy Renner to continue the series in Damon’s stead.
Since then, Gilroy has been dropped in favor of Justin Lin who’s at the helm of a 5th Bourne film with Renner. However, studios now want to reunite Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon to continue the Jason Bourne franchise which would put Lin and Renner’s version on hold.
That is to say, there’s a distinct possibility Matt Damon might return as Jason Bourne, a franchise that started in 2002.
But the most amazing part of this story is actually Justin Lin’s career trajectory. He went from a small critically acclaimed independent film Better Luck Tomorrow (also in 2002) to saving the Fast & Furious franchise (which he started) with Fast Five to possibly directing a Bourne Identity film. On the TV side, he’s directing season 2 of True Detective, one of the best shows on TV. Christ. In the 12 years that all this has happened, Lindsay Lohan went from child star to famous actress to burnout to irrelevant.
