Why Olivia Munn Turned Down ‘Deadpool’ for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

Olivia Munn has some real guts on her. I mean who does she think she is going for roles that take her out of her eye candy typecast? Doesn’t she realize that once you’re branded as one archetype, there’s no going back? This is your life now and there is no going back.

Anyway, Munn will starring in this month’s release of X-Men: Apocalypse as the all-powerful and hella badass Psylocke, but she had a chance to appear in Deadpool earlier this year. Deadpool, which to the surprise of many, became the highest paid opening for an R-rated movie ever. The movie was also offered to Munn, but she turned it down out of principle. God, who even has principles anymore?

The Wrap reports that Munn only agreed to play Psylocke over Deadpool’s girlfriend because she felt the character had more depth than visual reinforcement of an already powerful man. She didn’t want to just be another visual in an already CGI-saturated film when she could be sexy and badass all her own. Munn told American Way she had some serious questions when filmmakers approached her for both movies. She recalls asking:

I said, ‘Is there a fight scene?’ The fight scene … could be her monologue.

Revolutionary. Then upon further analysis, she just learned Psylocke was the better character overall.

“I thought Psylocke was always one of the most lethal characters, and I said, ‘Yes, as long as you’re not using her to be the eye candy. She has really powerful abilities.’

I mean the girl does deserve some time off from being somebody’s girlfriend. So far she’s gone from the woman with a rising actor career to a shadow behind her real life beau, Aaron Rodgers.
