Rob Lowe Won the Acting Role of a Lifetime

Rob Lowe follows in the esteemed lineage of Darrell Hammond, George Hamilton and Norm MacDonald as KFC named him their new Colonel Sanders. It’s all to promote the Zinger, a chicken sandwich that will hoepfully make our kids even fatter.

In a commercial for the sandwich, Lowe speaks very presidentially as he talks about launching the Zinger to space.

Will Lowe be as funny as the other Colonel Sanders were? Unilkely. No way you can beat out other actors like Hammond, Hamilton or MacDonald. Everyone should measure Colonel Sanders against MacDonald (MacDonald actually argues for Hammond as the best Colonel Sanders). MacDonald took that unique delivery of us and put it into Colonel Sanders’ bow tie and rimmed glasses.

Hammond and Hamilton worked because they transferred their own personalities into the Colonel Sanders character. Lowe doesn’t really have a unique personality. He just kinda…exists.

Hamilton had the suave Colonel Sanders which totally works.

Here’s Hammond as Colonel Sanders.

In an interesting sidenote, Hammond got super pissed at KFC for replacing him. They pumped him like he would be Colonel Sanders forever. Then, they suddenly replaced him with multiple Sanders. Sanders-es? Whatever. He said they “played” him. At the time, he said:

“That was the last time I get emotionally invested in my work,” Hammond said of the Sanders family praising his portrayal. “When you play me like that, when all along you knew what was coming, I don’t see the point in it.”

Wow, more fast food drama than a World Star video.

Lowe actually has history with Colonel Sanders.

The actor’s grandfather, who was head of the Ohio chapter of the National Restaurant Association in the 1960s, took him to meet the real Colonel Harland Sanders as a kid.

“It was a big deal,” Lowe said in a statement. “I thought this would be a nice homage to both Colonel Sanders and to my grandfather.”

Amazing. And to think, this is all to promote a chicken sandwich.
