First Look: ‘Heathers’ TV Series from Paramount Network

It’s been years in the making, but the Heathers TV show is happening, and we finally got to see it at last night’s MTV Music Video Awards. The sneak peek was also posted to the show’s Instagram feed after it aired.

Heathers seems like a strange choice for a modern remake. The original is one of my favorite movies, but it’s about two teenagers who use a suicide epidemic as cover to go on a killing spree while also finding the time to f**k each other senseless. Oh yeah, and it’s a comedy.

I’m not sure what to make of the new TV series. It’s been billed as a black comedy, like the original, so that’s good. It’s also apparently an anthology series, which I suppose will only come into play if it earns a second season. About the only good thing I can say is that Grace Victoria Cox is perfect as Veronica Sawyer, although her line in the trailer, “F**k me gently with a chainsaw,” wasn’t delivered by Veronica in the film. Nothing else in the trailer seemed particularly interesting or evocative of the original, though. It seems more like Awkward. than Heathers.

The reaction of the Internet to the trailer has been even harsher than my assessment.

I honestly didn’t see a positive reaction on Twitter to use as a contrast. Considering that the show has already been delayed a year and moved from TV Land to the smaller Paramount Network, this isn’t a great sign. Such is my love for the movie that I’m willing to wait until we actually see the show to pass judgement, but I’m not encouraged.

Loved the original ’cause of Winona, so a remake will be interesting.
