Won’t someone please think of the children?!

The Parents Television Council finished chastising Taylor Momsen for her Revolver cover and lucky for them a new popular topic came up this week for them to be outraged about. The PTC is now going after Glee’s GQ spread calling it pedophilia. A word not even pedophiles want to be associated with. In a just released statement, they claim Lea Michele, Dianna Agron and Cory Monteith all crossed a line. A very sexy line.

“It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, [ed. note: you mean it’s not Gay Quarterly?] is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on ‘Glee’ in this way. It borders on pedophilia. Sadly, this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“Many children who flocked to ‘High School Musical’ have grown into ‘Glee’ fans. They are now being treated to seductive, in-your-face poses of the underwear-clad female characters posing in front of school lockers, one of them opting for a full-frontal crotch shot. By authorizing this kind of near-pornographic display, the creators of the program have established their intentions on the show’s direction. And it isn’t good for families.

“While this photo shoot and the direction of the show in its second season have caught many parents off guard, we were concerned this might be coming. ‘Glee’ creator Ryan Murphy has declared that it is his goal in life to remove every barrier to the depiction of explicit sex on TV. On Bravo’s ‘Sex in the Box’ Murphy said, ‘It’s tough to get that sexual point of view across on television. Hopefully I have made it possible for somebody on broadcast television to do a rear-entry scene in three years. Maybe that will be my legacy.’

“With a demonstrated market of eager fans for an entertaining, musical-themed program like ‘Glee,’ we wonder why the show’s creators feel the need for such graphic sexualization of women. Interestingly, the photos of the male character showed him wearing a shirt, tie and vest.

“Parents need to be on guard as we expect the show to push the envelope even further. Unfortunately, it seems ‘Glee’ is only masquerading as family show and is far from appropriate for young viewers,” Winter concluded.

One important fact that hasn’t been stated is Lea Michele and Dianna Agron are both 24. Another fact is the “full-frontal crotch shot” that PTC talks about has no nudity and is nothing that Miley Cyrus doesn’t do in concert (oh wait, PTC went after her too huh?). This couldn’t be further from the border of pedophilia. Most people are able to separate fantasy from reality. For the few of them that can’t, there are temporary restraining orders. This is no different than having your girlfriend dress up in a catholic school girl outfit. If the PTC were on a dating website, their favorite position would be “missionary only for the purpose of procreating” and their most romantic evening would be “sleeping in separate beds.”

Although do note that Glee is from the mind of Ryan Murphy, the same guy who did Nip/Tuck and Popular so of course there’s going to be subversive elements in the show. Not only that, the Glee GQ shoot was done by that big pervert Terry Richardson who could make even pictures of an ice cream cone look dirty.

I think what PTC meant here was that these actresses play characters many teenage girls look up to. and when these girls see images like these they, ahem, might want to make same pictures…
but these pictures are hot, there’s no denying to that. too bad corey isn’t shirtless. not in the obvious posing way but as if he’s taking off his shirt to change into his football outfit or something :D

it doesn’t matter if the girls are actually 24 – the key phrase here is ‘portraying highschool characters’ – clearly these pictures are not shots of the actors as the individuals they are but as the very HIGHSCHOOL characters that they are playing what with the highschool setting, the pompoms for the cheerleader, the drums for cory [actually on of his characters interests in the show], rachel pulling off the fantasy sexy geek thing so you know – PTC does have a point – it is pedophilic when the image portrayed is of the girls as 17 year old highschool… Read more »
