Justin Bieber’s mom released her life story called Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom. What does it say when your own life story doesn’t even have your name in the title?
Pattie Mallette, who her friends know her by, promoted her book on Today opening up to Kathie Lee Gifford about being a single mom who had her virginity taken when she was 15 and was knocked up by 17. She said she almost aborted Bieber but after being visited by a Christian counselor, she knew she had to keep him.
Surviving a suicide attempt in her teens after being sexually abused, Mallette told Gifford she had a spiritual awakening when she was visited by a Christian counselor in a psychiatric ward during her recovery. “I just knew I couldn’t [abort it]. I just knew I couldn’t,” Mallette — who was “messed up” on drugs and alcohol at the time she tried to take her own life — said. “I just know I had to keep him,” she told Gifford. “I didn’t know how I was going to do it. But I just knew that I couldn’t abort. I had to do my best. I had to see what I could do. And I was determined to do whatever it took.”
That counselor must have laid it on pretty thick. So which method did he use? Did he go all fire and brimstone and tell her she’ll be damned to hell if she aborted fetal Bieber or did he go the subversive route and fill her with just enough guilt and doubt to push her in the direction he wanted while making it seem like she was making her own decision? Whatever the case, everything seemed to turn out just fine. *Makes cash register sound*
