2016 is the year of the barbarian. We’ve been too privileged in these relatively peaceful years and with a healthy amount of social consciousness been thrown into the mix, we have to have a balance of socially condoned violence against the violent.
It’s been the worst week of one mother’s life with her 10-month-old baby girl, Emmaleign Barringer, having succumbed to injuries sustained from a violent rape on Wednesday. The mother’s (presumably ex-) boyfriend, Benjamin Taylor, has been charged with the rape and murder. He claims to have no recollection of what happened to the girl while she was in his care, citing a ‘black out.’
But the internet thinks a cushy 8×8 cell is too kind for a child rapist and murderer. 51,902 internets that is. Now, a petition to the White House has emerged to request a public hanging. And frankly, it sounds like a half-decent idea. The petition reads:
Prison is too good for child rapists and their ilk. When it’s an open and shut case such as this, let us hang these creatures publicly. Let us make examples of them, and allow the American people to attend these hangings so that the accused may be ridiculed, as they should be.
There is no death penalty in West Virginia anymore–trust me, this is very shocking to me too, but if the petition is able to double its signage by the end of the month, the White House is required to respond. Rest in power to this little girl. I’ve been told I’m too depressing, but there’s nothing lighthearted to share here.
